Why Your AC Freezes Up in South Florida (and How to Fix It)

Finding ice on your air conditioner when it's 92 degrees outside feels like a contradiction — but in humid South Florida it's one of the most common AC problems we see. Here's what's actually happening and how to handle it.

Why does an AC freeze up?

Your evaporator coil gets cold to pull heat and humidity out of your air. If something disrupts the airflow or refrigerant balance, that coil drops below freezing and the moisture in our humid air condenses and freezes on it. The ice then blocks airflow, and the system blows warm air or stops cooling altogether.

The usual culprits

  • Dirty air filter — the most common cause; restricted airflow lets the coil get too cold.
  • Low refrigerant — a leak drops coil temperature below freezing.
  • Blocked return vents — furniture or rugs starving the system of return air.
  • Dirty evaporator coil — buildup insulates the coil and disrupts heat transfer.
  • Running the AC on a cool night — running cooling when it's already below ~62°F outside can freeze the coil.

What to do right now

  1. Turn the system to "fan only" (or off) to stop making ice and let the coil thaw — this can take a few hours.
  2. Replace the air filter.
  3. Make sure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed.
  4. Once fully thawed, switch back to cooling and watch it.

Never chip at the ice — you can puncture the coil and turn a cheap fix into an expensive one.

How to prevent it

Change your filter every 30–90 days, keep the area around the indoor and outdoor units clear, and get a professional tune-up twice a year. Because we run AC nearly year-round in Broward County, our systems work harder than systems up north — regular maintenance is what keeps coils clean and refrigerant in spec.

If your AC keeps freezing after a filter change, you likely have a refrigerant or coil issue. The AC Boys can diagnose it fast — call (954) 662-5472 or book online.
