How Long Does an AC Last in Coastal South Florida?

AC MaintenanceBuyer's Guide

The national rule of thumb says an AC lasts 15–20 years. In coastal South Florida, the real answer is shorter — and understanding why helps you plan ahead instead of getting caught with a dead system in August.
The realistic lifespan here: 10–15 years
In Florida's hot, humid, coastal climate, a central AC system typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Two things work against the national average:
- Runtime. We run AC nearly year-round, so a system here logs far more operating hours than one in a four-season climate.
- Salt air. In eastern, coastal Broward neighborhoods, airborne salt accelerates corrosion on the outdoor condenser coil and components.
Signs your system is near the end
- It's 10+ years old and needs a major repair.
- Rising electric bills despite normal use.
- Frequent breakdowns or repeated refrigerant top-offs.
- Uneven cooling or constant humidity indoors.
- It still uses R-22 refrigerant, which is phased out and expensive.
How to get every year out of it
- Maintain it twice a year. Coil cleaning, refrigerant checks, and electrical inspections catch small problems before they cascade.
- Rinse the condenser periodically to clear salt and debris (power off first).
- Change filters every 30–90 days.
- Keep landscaping clear around the outdoor unit for airflow.
Not sure how much life your system has left? A maintenance visit gives you an honest assessment. Schedule a tune-up or call (954) 662-5472.
