Repair or Replace My AC?

Repair or Replace My AC?

When an AC breaks in South Florida, the decision often comes down to speed, cost, and confidence. Do you put money into the repair, or is it time to replace the system? A useful rule of thumb is the 10-year and 50-percent rule: if the system is over 10 years old and the repair costs more than about half the cost of replacement, replacement usually deserves serious consideration.

Why age matters more in Florida

Air conditioners in Broward County work harder than systems in many other parts of the country. They run for long seasons, fight heavy humidity, and sit outside in heat, storms, and salt air. A national average lifespan may sound generous, but coastal South Florida systems often become expensive to own after 10 to 15 years.

Age alone does not mean you must replace the unit. A well-maintained 9-year-old system with a simple capacitor failure may be worth repairing. A 13-year-old system with a leaking coil, weak compressor, and high electric bills is a different story.

Comfort matters too. If the system only works when the thermostat is set very low, or if it cools the hallway but leaves bedrooms humid, the repair decision should include more than whether the outdoor fan can be made to spin again. South Florida homes need moisture control, steady airflow, and reliable drainage as much as cold supply air.

When repair makes sense

  • The system is under 10 years old.
  • The repair is minor and falls in the normal $150 to $650 range.
  • The system cools evenly and controls humidity well.
  • Parts are available and the refrigerant type is current.
  • You have had few recent breakdowns.

When replacement makes sense

  • The system is 10 years old or older and needs a major repair.
  • The compressor or evaporator coil has failed.
  • You are repeatedly paying for refrigerant or electrical repairs.
  • Rooms stay humid or uneven even after service.
  • Your FPL bill keeps rising without a clear usage change.
  • You plan to stay in the home and want warranty protection.

Look beyond the repair invoice

The cheapest immediate option is not always the lowest-cost option over the next few years. A major repair on an older system may buy time, but it may not improve efficiency, humidity control, noise, or reliability. On the other hand, replacing too early can waste money if the system has plenty of life left.

Ask for both numbers when the decision is close: the repair cost and the replacement estimate. Then compare age, warranty, expected efficiency, comfort, and risk. If the system uses older refrigerant, has corrosion near the outdoor coil, or has a history of drain and airflow problems, those factors should weigh into the decision.

Also consider your timeline. If you plan to sell soon, a documented repair may be enough if the system is otherwise presentable and permitted. If you plan to stay in the home, a replacement can provide a new warranty, better efficiency, and fewer emergency calls. Neither answer is automatic; the right choice depends on the equipment, the home, and your tolerance for another breakdown.
