Why Is My AC Leaking Water Inside?

If your AC is leaking water inside, do not ignore it. In Broward County homes, condos, and townhomes, the most common cause is a clogged condensate drain line. Our systems pull gallons of moisture out of the air during a normal summer day, and that water has to drain somewhere. When algae, sludge, rust, or debris blocks the drain, the water backs up into the air handler, float switch, closet, garage, ceiling, or floor.

Why South Florida AC systems make so much water

An air conditioner does two jobs: it cools the air and removes humidity. Because South Florida humidity stays high for much of the year, your evaporator coil constantly collects moisture. That moisture drips into a drain pan and exits through a PVC condensate line. In drier climates, the drain may not work as hard. In Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, and surrounding areas, it is active almost every day.

That steady moisture creates the perfect place for algae and biological buildup. Even a small restriction can turn into a backup during a long cooling cycle. If your AC closet is near wood flooring, drywall, or a ceiling return, a small leak can become property damage quickly.

Common signs of a clogged condensate drain

  • Water around the indoor air handler or closet.
  • A wet safety pan under the unit.
  • The thermostat is blank because the float switch shut the system down.
  • A musty smell near the return or air handler.
  • Cooling stops, then returns after water drains slowly.

When to shut the AC off

If you see active water leaking, turn the system off at the thermostat. If water is near electrical components, ceiling drywall, or a condo neighbor below you, shut it off immediately and call for service. A float switch is designed to stop the system before overflow, but not every installation has one, and switches can fail or be bypassed.

You can check the air filter and make sure the drain outlet is not blocked by mulch, mud, or landscaping. Avoid pouring harsh chemicals into the drain line. They can damage fittings, pans, and coils, and they usually do not clear the whole blockage. A technician can vacuum and flush the line, verify slope, clean the pan, test the float switch, and make sure the leak is not coming from a cracked pan, frozen coil, or refrigerant issue.

How to prevent the next leak

Routine maintenance is the best prevention. In South Florida, drain lines should be checked and cleared regularly because AC systems run close to year-round. Keeping filters clean also matters because poor airflow can freeze the coil, and a thawing coil can create more water than the pan can handle.

Most drain-related AC repairs in Broward County fall in the normal residential repair range of $150 to $650, depending on access and whether parts are needed. If your AC is leaking now, our AC repair team can clear the drain, check the safety switch, and find the real source. Book online or call (954) 662-5472.
