AC Blowing Warm Air? 6 Common Causes in South Florida

It's a hot Broward afternoon, the thermostat says cooling, but the vents are pushing warm air. Before it turns into an uncomfortable night, here are the six causes we see most often — roughly in the order we check them.
1. A dirty or clogged air filter
This is the number one cause, and the easiest to rule out. A clogged filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil, which can cause weak, lukewarm air and even freeze the system up. In our year-round cooling climate, check your filter monthly and replace it every 30–90 days.
2. The thermostat is set wrong
It sounds obvious, but a thermostat bumped to "fan on" (instead of "auto") will blow room-temperature air between cooling cycles. Confirm it's set to cool and auto, and that the temperature is actually below the room reading.
3. Low refrigerant from a leak
If your system is low on refrigerant, it physically can't remove heat from the air. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" — low levels almost always mean a leak that needs to be found and sealed, not just topped off. This is a job for a licensed technician.
4. A frozen evaporator coil
Restricted airflow or low refrigerant can cause the indoor coil to ice over, which then blows warm air. If you see ice on the indoor unit or the refrigerant line, turn the system to "fan only" to let it thaw and call for service.
5. A failing capacitor or compressor
The compressor is the heart of your AC. If the outdoor unit is running but not cooling — or the fan spins but the compressor is silent — a worn capacitor or failing compressor may be to blame. These need professional diagnosis.
6. Dirty outdoor condenser coils
In South Florida, condenser coils collect dust, grass clippings, and salt residue that insulate the coil and trap heat. Gently rinsing the outdoor unit (power off first) can help, but caked-on buildup needs a proper cleaning.
When to call a technician
If a fresh filter and correct thermostat settings don't fix it within an hour or two, stop guessing — running a struggling system can turn a small repair into a compressor replacement. Most residential AC repairs in Broward County run $150 to $650.
